Herbert H. Tsang, PhD, P.Eng. is a Full Professor of Computing Science and Mathematics, and Director of the Applied Research Lab at Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. His research centers on leveraging computational technologies to address real-world challenges with meaningful impact on society. His current interests include computational intelligence, bioinformatics, mobile computing, and scientific visualization.
Dr. Tsang also holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University (SFU), where he has previously taught in the Schools of Computing Science, Engineering Science, Interactive Arts & Technology, and Mechatronic Systems Engineering.
He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary under the prestigious NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Tsang served as scientific and engineering staff at MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, contributing to remote sensing, space, and defense projects for clients such as the Canadian Space Agency and the Canadian Navy.
Dr. Tsang has been awarded research funding from all three of Canada's federal granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He has also received support from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and Mitacs.
In recognition of his pioneering work in mobile learning, Dr. Tsang received the International E-Learning Association’s Mobile Learning Award in 2018 and the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education’s Excellence and Innovation – Partnership & Collaboration Award in 2019.
He is a Senior Member of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), as well as a member of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. Dr. Tsang is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia and serves as a mentor to members-in-training and professional applicants through Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
His service to the academic community includes acting as a guest editor for Security Informatics, and as a reviewer for journals such as IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and OUP Bioinformatics, as well as for national and international granting agencies including NSERC and the Estonian Research Council.
